Breaking Boundaries

Initiatives

Programmes that turn ice time into lifetime.

Every initiative is designed around a single principle: remove the barrier, then raise the standard.

Breaking Boundaries creates connected pathways through sport, mentorship, safety, physical development, education, qualifications and career access. Each initiative forms part of a wider journey designed to help young people move from first exposure to greater opportunity.

Community outreach and school engagement.

Active Outreach / Introductory Camp in Planning

Purpose

To create accessible entry points into the Breaking Boundaries pathway and identify young people who may benefit from structured sport, mentorship and development opportunities.

Breaking Boundaries does not wait for potential to arrive at its door. We engage schools and communities directly, build relationships and create opportunities for young people to experience pathways that may previously have felt out of reach.

More than 70 schools have already been contacted regarding the proposed hockey development programme, with substantial early interest received from schools and prospective participants.

The next stage is an introductory meeting and camp, currently being organised for later in 2026, before the targeted formal launch of the first programme in the first quarter of 2027.

Initiative 02

Silverbacks hockey development.

Formal Programme Targeted for Q1 2027

Purpose

To create a structured ice-hockey development pathway through access, coaching, equipment, mentorship and progression.

Silverbacks Ice Hockey Club is one of the principal programmes through which Breaking Boundaries creates access, develops confidence and builds structured progression.

The programme is designed to give young people an introduction to the sport, followed by access to coaching, ice time, equipment, mentorship and opportunities to develop within the South African hockey environment.

Silverbacks is not the full Breaking Boundaries mission. It is one of the most powerful vehicles through which that mission is delivered.

Initiative 03 · Flagship

Standing against bullying.

Central Programme Commitment

Anti-bullying is not an optional addition to Breaking Boundaries. It is a central part of the environment we are committed to creating.

Young people develop best when they feel safe, respected and supported. Through education, mentorship, team culture and community engagement, Breaking Boundaries will challenge bullying before it becomes normalised and help young people develop the confidence to speak up, support one another and understand the consequences of harmful behaviour.

Our programmes will promote respect, accountability, inclusion and positive intervention. Coaches, mentors, participants and families will all have a role in creating environments where bullying is confronted rather than ignored.

The goal is not only to respond to incidents. It is to build a culture in which bullying is less likely to take hold in the first place.

Our youth-development work is supported by clear behaviour, safety and anti-bullying standards.

View Safety & Behaviour Standards

We guarantee that bullying will never be treated as normal, acceptable or beneath our attention.

Initiative 04

Fitness, nutrition, mentorship and wellbeing.

Confirmed Programme Component

Purpose

To develop the whole person — body, mind, character and leadership — alongside sport.

Breaking Boundaries is designed to develop the whole person. Participants will be supported not only through sport, but through mentorship, physical development, nutrition education, leadership, discipline and a stronger understanding of personal wellbeing.

With the confirmed support of Breaking Boundaries ambassador Boyd Allen and Apex, participants will have access to age-appropriate fitness development, conditioning guidance, nutrition education, recovery awareness and practical healthy-habit support.

These services are intended to help young people build stronger bodies, greater confidence, improved discipline and a better understanding of how consistency contributes to progress both within sport and beyond it.

Participants will also have access to mentors, coaches, ambassadors and professionals who can help them develop accountability, confidence, communication, resilience and leadership.

Fitness, conditioning, nutrition and wellbeing support through Boyd Allen and Apex is a confirmed programme component. Full partner profiles appear on the Partners page.

Initiative 05

Future pathways.

Breaking Boundaries creates opportunities beyond playing hockey — qualifications, income opportunities, industry exposure and access to the working world.

A

Financial capability & industry exposure

Older participants will be introduced to practical financial education, financial-services careers and the workings of the long-term and short-term insurance industries.

Through established financial-services and brokerage relationships, participants may gain access to industry insight, professional mentoring, work-readiness guidance and exposure to potential career pathways.

B

Refereeing certification & paid officiating

Participants interested in officiating can be supported towards recognised refereeing certification.

Once appropriately qualified and appointed, referees may earn income by officiating games — turning knowledge of the sport into responsibility, experience and potential earnings.

C

Entry-level coaching development

Participants interested in coaching can be supported towards appropriate entry-level hockey coaching courses.

Coaching qualifications strengthen their understanding of the sport and create future opportunities in leadership, youth development and club coaching.

D

Career access & recruitment support

Breaking Boundaries is committed to helping older participants prepare for opportunities beyond school and sport.

Through our confirmed alignment with CTR Recruit (Pty) Ltd, eligible older participants will have access to practical work-readiness and recruitment support — including career guidance, CV preparation, interview readiness, candidate registration and referrals to suitable employment opportunities.

The recruitment pathway will complement financial education, industry exposure, mentoring, coaching and refereeing opportunities — helping participants move from personal development into qualifications, potential income opportunities and the working world.
